Periodicity and convergence for xn + 1 = | xn − xn − 1 |

چکیده

Each solution {xn} of the equation in the title is either eventually periodic with period 3 or else, it converges to zero—which case occurs depends on whether the ratio of the initial values of {xn} is rational or irrational. Further, the sequence of ratios {xn/xn−1} satisfies a first-order difference equation that has periodic orbits of all integer periods except 3. p-cycles for each p = 3 are explicitly determined in terms of the Fibonacci numbers. In spite of the non-existence of period 3, the unique positive fixed point of the first-order equation is shown to be a snap-back repeller so the irrational ratios behave chaotically.  2003 Elsevier Inc. Almost Sure Convergence Rates for the Estimation of a Covariance Operator for Negatively Associated Samples

Let {Xn, n >= 1} be a strictly stationary sequence of negatively associated random variables, with common continuous and bounded distribution function F. In this paper, we consider the estimation of the two-dimensional distribution function of (X1,Xk+1) based on histogram type estimators as well as the estimation of the covariance function of the limit empirical process induced by the se...

Behavior of the Positive Solutions of Fuzzy Max-difference Equations

We extend some results obtained in 1998 and 1999 by studying the periodicity of the solutions of the fuzzy difference equations xn+1 = max{A/xn,A/xn−1, . . . ,A/xn−k}, xn+1 = max{A0/xn,A1/xn−1}, where k is a positive integer, A, Ai, i= 0,1, are positive fuzzy numbers, and the initial values xi, i=−k,−k + 1, . . . ,0 (resp., i=−1,0) of the first (resp., second) equation are positive fuzzy numbers.

On the Periodicity of Certain Recursive Sequences

In 2000, Viswanath showed that random Fibonacci sequences grow exponentially and calculated the rate at which they grow assuming the coin flipped was fair. In this paper, we explore the Fibonacci sequences generated by finite, repeating sequences of pluses and minuses. The main results of this paper will be to show the necessary conditions for a sequence to be periodic, as well as to show all t...

Research Article On Global Periodicity of a Class of Difference Equations

We show that the difference equation xn = f3(xn−1) f2(xn−2) f1(xn−3), n ∈ N0, where fi ∈ C[(0,∞),(0,∞)], i ∈ {1,2,3}, is periodic with period 4 if and only if fi(x) = ci/x for some positive constants ci, i ∈ {1,2,3} or if fi(x) = ci/x when i = 2 and fi(x) = cix if i ∈ {1,3}, with c1c2c3 = 1. Also, we prove that the difference equation xn = f4(xn−1) f3(xn−2) f2(xn−3) f1(xn−4), n ∈ N0, where fi ∈...
